Physiotherapy for neurological disorders - adult and paediatric

Conductive Education (CE) is an approach devised by Andras Peto, in Hungary fifty years ago. It is an educational system with a holistic approach designed to help children and adults with motor disorders. The principle behind CE is learning how to learn.

The aim is to enable the physical, intellectual, social and personal development of the individual. Specialist educators called "conductors" help implement a programme of rehabilitation for each individual through an education curriculum as well as physiotherapy. It focuses on body control, mobility and communication and is appropriate to the learners' age, their ability and needs. In its pure form, it is intensive, lasting on average five hours a day and five days a week.

Parents are involved as much as possible. The emphasis is put on group activities, as it is believed that children will learn from each other. This system is goal oriented and does not focus on the causes of disabilities. The equipment used is a plinth (slatted chair) and a ladder chair.

CE is not suitable for all children - a "dynamic assessment" usually takes place to find out whether it can be beneficial.
