General Guidance on neuro-physiotherapy:

Information about the therapy we provide for all clients - adults, teenagers and children - can be found here. Additional pages on Children and Young Adults expand on some of the unique aspects of therapy for younger clients.

Why do I need neuro-physiotherapy?

Neuro-physiotherapy is helpful to those whose body movements are not ‘normal’ due to a neurological disorder. Such disorders, whether arising from illness or accident, disrupt the neurological pathways connecting the brain and body. Motor nerves, sensation and brain patterns may all be affected.

The disruption may be temporary or permanent, short or long term. Medical diagnosis, advice and outlook are often very uncertain.

Your daily life may be affected. You feel uncomfortable, afraid, worried and angry both for now and the future. You would like to:

try to get better,
learn how to manage the changes in your body
do something positive to improve your situation.

How does neuro-physiotherapy help me?

The natural response to neurological disorder is to do less – it hurts, it is frightening, we feel out of control and frustrated. Neuro-physiotherapy will:

help identify and stimulate the neural pathways that affect movement
help you understand how your disorder has affected your body.
allow you to feel more confident
assist you in achieving the changes necessary to improve.

The key to rehabilitation is not to stop moving but to keep moving in a safe environment, to rebuild ability and confidence. Many conditions can recover and improve over long time periods. Even where full recovery is not achievable, we can suggest ways to:

  • mobilise your body
  • work with your condition
  • reduce discomfort
  • improve your quality of life.

We can also offer professional advice and support for you in:

  • attending wheelchair clinics
  • identifying the need for, and obtaining, specialist aids e.g. orthotics
  • liaising with other professionals
  • involving family and care workers in your rehabilitation
  • providing written reports for courts, doctors, social services, private health providers

What benefits will I receive?

  • improvements in key physical tasks - sitting, standing, walking and so on
  • maintainance of peak performance – more resilience to relapses and secondary complications
  • therapy will relax you - you feel more in control, less frustrated and stressed
  • the combination of movement, relaxation and confidence often reduces pain and improves your quality of life.

How does it take place?

Sessions will normally take place in the clinic, lasting for one hour. You will be asked to wear casual clothing. We have a hands-on approach – with a neurological disorder there is usually no other approach to take. The clinic is spacious and equipped with aids to assist us. Initially we will work with you to:

  1. identify your areas of concern
  2. understand the impact the condition has had on your life
  3. develop a rehabilitation programme that works for you.

In subsequent sessions, we will attempt:

  • to position and re-align the muscles and joints
  • to create normal movement.

This stimulates the brain and body to ‘remember’ normal movement patterns. Patterns need to be repeated in different ways many times over, practiced and corrected to stimulate the neural pathways, mobilise and strengthen the appropriate muscles.

Research has shown this neural stimulation to be the most effective method of maintenance and recovery for those with neurological disorders.

I might be interested, what next?

  • contact us by email or phone for a preliminary discussion about your needs
  • arrange to meet for an initial consultation
  • the first session may take up to two hours as we will discuss your history and your personal needs will be assessed
  • after this we will agree on how best to proceed with future treatments

Client Testimonial

My condition developed quickly and was both relentless and frighteningly life- changing.

Consequently, I have been seeing Farshideh for more years than I care to remember. She is unstintingly generous in effort and time with all her clients.

Farshideh was, and continues to be, an invaluable support in helping me to manage and adapt to all that my condition brings with it.

Client Testimonial

My son Simon suffered from numerous neurological and other problems as a result of bone cancer and two major operations.

Specialised physiotherapy was a necessity and his sessions with Farshideh were sacrosanct; if it was the only thing he could do that day, he would not miss it.

He was faced with different physical obstacles all the time and got upset and frustrated at times. He would make a mental note before each session which particular - often new - difficulty needed to be tackled and knew that

Farshideh would explain the reasons to him and try and find a solution. She gave him all the physical, practical and mental support she could. When I picked him up, he may have been physically exhausted, but felt more in charge of his illness.

He left the session relaxed - and so did I.

Daniela, Simons mum.
